With much of the UK still experiencing poor weather and low temperatures, the unsettled conditions look set to continue leaving the UK facing the coldest winter since 1979. Energy efficiency website thinkinsulation.com has provided some top tips for homeowners to stay cosy indoors.

The plunging temperatures could not have hit some homeowners at a worse time as the economic downturn continues to bite and families look to make savings following Christmas - yet thermostats are being turned up, heating is left on and energy consumption is at an all time high. Home insulation is a quick and easy solution to keep a house warmer for longer which saves money too.

Insulating a house against the big freeze couldn't be easier; it takes just a morning to make a real difference by following the simple DIY tips below*:

- Buy loft insulation - glass mineral wool is made from recycled glass bottles and products such as Space Insulation with ECOSE® Technology, available from all major DIY stores, is one of the most environmentally friendly options. Homes could save up to £150* each year on energy bills and if everyone in the UK topped up loft insulation to 270mm it would save around £520million - that could mean saving three million tonnes of CO2 every year!

- Lay insulation - it takes just 2-3 hours to lay the recommended 270mm of insulation in a loft and as heat rises the benefit will be instant. A guide to laying insulation is available at www.thinkinsulation.com

- Fit draught excluders - families can save £25 a year simply by blocking draughts through doors and windows, and many excluders can be homemade too

- Insulate the tank - put a £12 British Standard 'jacket' around the hot water cylinder - this will cut heat loss by over 75 per cent and save around £35 each year

- Try pipe insulation - fitting insulation around exposed pipes is an easy DIY job to keep heat where it belongs

Lydia Sharples from Thinkinsulation.com, says: "There are so many simple ways in which households can become more energy efficient and save money as an added bonus - the payback on insulating loft insulation can be as little as two years.

"As one third of all heat escapes through the walls of a house it's also worth investigating cavity or solid wall insulation, particularly as there are many grants available at the moment too."

It's not only insulation that can help a home be more energy efficient. Bleeding radiators to remove unwanted air will keep them working at maximum output, and lowering the house thermostat by just one degree can save up to £55 each year too. In addition the Government launched its new boiler scrappage scheme on 5th January, which offers £400 cashback when a G rated boiler is replaced with an energy efficient A rated one, helping homeowners up and down the country.
