The amount you spend and save depends primarily on whether you currently have any insulation at all in your loft, and if you decide to install it yourself or leave it to a professional. If you have no loft insulation and you install the recommended 275mm depth you could save around £110 a year on your heating bills and nearly 1 tonne of CO2 per year 1.
And remember, insulation is maintenance free. You will continue to enjoy the savings year after year.
The following table gives approximate costs, savings and paybacks for loft insulation:
| No existing loft insulation |
50mm existing insulation topped up to recommended 270mm | |
| Annual saving per year | £110 | £30 |
| Installation cost | Around £500 | Around £500 |
| Installed payback | Around 4 years | Around 16 years |
